Biomolecular Chemistry, Komatsu Lab. lead by Professor Dr. Teruyuki Komatsu is one of the most active and professional lab. in Chuo University.
The paper on “Catalase–albumin cluster incorporating protoporphyrin IX: an O2 generating photosensitizer for enhanced photodynamic therapy” was published in Materials Advances (an international, gold open access journal, publishing high-quality research across the breadth of materials science) and appeared on the front cover.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-surgical cancer treatment using a light source such as an LED or laser. To confer stronger O2 generation ability to the sensitizer for cancer treatment, Prof. Komatsu exploited a catalase (Cat) which is the most powerful H2O2 dismutation enzyme in nature. For this study, Prof. Komatsu’s team have demonstrated the synthesis, structure, and enzymatic activity of the Cat-HSA5 cluster (HSA: human serum albumin). Moreover, the photophysical properties and PDT activity of Cat-HSA5 incorporating protoporphyrin IX (PP) [Cat-(HSA-PP)5] have been characterized. The results indicate that his approach can create a new class of dual-functional hemoprotein-based medicines for advanced PDT.
Paper published in Mater. Adv. 2022, 3, 6451-6457.
