Message from the Director

Greetings from the Director, the Research and Development Initiative, Chuo University

The Research and Development Initiative of Chuo University was established in July 1999 with the aim of generating knowledge to solve the most pressing problems of modern society through interdisciplinary joint research in collaboration with industry, academia, and government. We celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024. The Initiative has established ‘Research Units’ for each project, consisting of researchers, including both visiting scholars and faculty members. Each Research Unit carries out research with its own objectives and a clearly stated plan based on external funding from government agencies, companies and other sources.

The Research and Development Initiative conducts research in a wide range of fields relevant to Chuo University as a whole. The Research Units include science and engineering fields (social infrastructure and planning, environmental conservation and sustainability, robotics, nanomaterials, big data, etc.) and humanities and science fusion fields (policy science, psychology, brain science, etc.). By the end of FY2023, the total number of Research Units has exceeded 120, with research results that have both academic and social impact. The Research Units will continue to produce research that is influential both academically and socially.

Today, the world is undergoing serious structural changes ranging from geopolitics and climate change to artificial intelligence. Japan has a mountain of issues to deal with, such as an aging population, and we must create and disseminate cutting-edge knowledge to solve pressing social issues. Interdisciplinary research is indispensable for solving these issues. This is also the mission of our university. Through research in collaboration with other universities and institutions, we intend to expand the Research and Development Initiative that can make a greater contribution to society. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to our collaboration.
